Material Honesty: The Raw Appeal of Concrete

Every kitchen remodel starts with a Pinterest board and ends with a working room. The distance between those two points is mostly decisions - and not the ones most people expect. By the time you’re choosing cabinet pulls, the choices that actually shaped your kitchen were made months earlier.

After more than two hundred renovations, we’ve found that five early decisions determine whether a kitchen feels effortless or merely finished. Here’s how we walk every client through them.

1. The work triangle still matters

Before color, before stone, before any of the fun parts, we map how you move. The relationship between sink, stove, and refrigerator sets the rhythm of every meal you’ll ever cook here. Get it wrong and no finish will save it.

“A beautiful kitchen that fights you every morning isn’t a beautiful kitchen.”

We sketch the triangle first, then design everything else around it. It’s the single most overlooked decision and the one with the highest daily payoff.

2. Storage is a strategy, not an afterthought

Cabinets aren’t storage - they’re a system. We spend a full session understanding what you own, how often you reach for it, and where it should live. The result is a kitchen where everything has a home and nothing lives on the counter.

3. Lighting is three jobs, not one

Most kitchens have one harsh light doing the work of three. We layer ambient, task, and accent lighting so the room can shift from a bright Saturday prep session to a quiet evening glass of wine without touching a single fixture you’d want to hide.

4. Choose materials for the tenth year

Anything looks good on install day. The question we ask is how a surface looks after a decade of real life — hot pans, spilled wine, a thousand dinners. We steer clients toward materials that earn their patina rather than wear it as damage.

5. Plan the build, not just the look

The least glamorous decision - sequencing the work - is what keeps a renovation on time and on budget. A kitchen done in the right order, by one accountable crew, simply goes better. That’s not a finish you can see, but it’s the one you feel every day the project runs smoothly.
